Exercise can reverse aging
I read an article a while ago stating that exercise can help reverse the aging process at the cellular level. We all know that exercise is good for the body as it boosts circulation and tones the cardiovascular system. It builds strength, burns callories, and reduces depression. It improves insulin sensitivity in people with diabetes. It may even delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. It can even partially reverse aging at the cellular level.
A study from PLOS One looks at the effects of six months of strength training in 25 elderly volunteers of 65 and older. The strength training involved a rigorous training twice a week for six months using the same types of machines found in most gyms. Trainers and kinesiologists were there throughout to make sure participants used the equipment properly and didn’t injure themselves. The participants were in good shape to begin with.
The researchers took small biopsies of thigh-muscle cells from the seniors before and after the six-month period. Then they compared them to 26 young volunteers around 22yrs old. They found that after six months of resistance training, there were dramatic changes at the genetic level. The participants reported haveing more energy and object measurements showed that their strength improved by 50%.
The moral is “You’re never too old to exercise. You’re only as old as your genes”

Ha! Nice. I guess that all that exercise that you’re doing is worth it after all.
