Once upon...

an evening boring, while I pondered bored yet pensive,
Over many a strange and intriguing page of neglected blogs.
Swiftly, my mind began thinking, thinking of creating
A place of solace, of mapping of my thoughts and creations.
So welcome dear guests, if my words entice you.

When you can strike something off on your “Accomplishments” or “Dream List“, you feel that much better that you are actually doing something and reach something that you have set for yourself. I can say that finally, I can scratch off going to see the Backstreet Boys. A dream that I had since I was only in 5th grade, almost 13 years ago, and now, I have finally got to see them.

A dream that I had … almost 13 years ago, and now, I have finally got to see them.

I couldn’t believe it when my boss was going to send me to bSb. I thought I had missed my last opportunity last time when they came, in 2005, the year that I got married. Because I was getting married, I didn’t really have the chance or funds to go but I’m glad that I was able to go this time. My boss gave me two tickets and so I decided to take my sister. It was her first real concert that she was going to go to besides all of her Christian ones that she went to. Man, she went more crazy than I did. But I’m glad because I actually brought her to somewhere and did something with her, having some sister bonding time.

Girlicious opened up for Backstreet Boys. They were awesome as well, it’s only that their voices are a little bit high. But still, they danced great. I think they dance and sing a lot better than the Pussy Cat Dolls, because the Pussy Cat Dolls, when I saw them for Christina Aguilera, they were so out of sync, and even though they danced, they felt all over the place. But Girlicious brought it, and they were pretty good. The only one who I think is still faltering is Christina, because she didn’t seem like she had that much energy as the other girls. My favorite of course is Natalie. Unfortunately, they were only on stage for about half an hour.

Soon, they’ll be around for 20 years, and 25 years, and I still won’t hit 40 years old yet.

When the Backstreet Boys finally stepped on stage, the crowd went wild. We were on the floor, 8th row, and was pretty close but oh how much I wanted to be in front row and be able to touch Brian’s hand. *sigh* Lol, that’s my little dream girl talk of course. But they were still amazing, and they’ve been around for 15 years already!! WOW, that is quite long. Soon, they’ll be around for 20 years, and 25 years, and I still won’t hit 40 years old yet.

My sister and I screamed so loud, and we sang to almost all of their songs. I couldn’t believe how wild the crowd was for Nick still. I don’t think he’s that good looking anymore, and I hear that he smokes up before he hits the stage, but you never know if it’s true. But I wouldn’t doubt it since he seems to have a LOT of energy. I do hope their next concert, I will be there again. I don’t think I will ever get over them.

Artistic rivalry of sorts

The Subliminal Twilight
Nikon D80; Focal length: 18mm; Aperture value: F/3.5; Exposure time: 1/10 sec.; ISO speed: 200

I wax lyrical about delicious sunsets at 5PM. It’s when the sky is brilliantly alive and completely subliminal.  But it’s not always that I have a camera with me.  Some things are always about being in the right place, at the right time, with the right person.

But while we’re on “artistic” endeavors of sorts: Recently, in my Communications module for Architecture, I had to design an online portfolio. It’s all fine and dandy, right? Right, until you realize that you’re more knowledgeable than your tutor who’s been dishing it out for the past > 5 years to first year Architecture students. But let me tell you why:

  1. My tutor’s knowledge is entrenched in the standards and deprecated code of 6 years ago. From observation, he’s taken what he’s learned 6 years ago, and never bothered to acquaint himself with the new developments. For hobbyists, it’s acceptable, but for someone to be “qualified” to teach the blind minions in Architecture how to code, you should be at least informed of the semi-latest trends!  Of course, he is teaching through Adobe Dreamweaver, but that still doesn’t excuse his lack of updated knowledge.
  2. His “concept” of a good design, and for that matter, a portfolio falls miles off the target.  To me, a portfolio should be elegant.  It should be functional and accessible to give your visitor the greatest ease of browsing.  It should sport a design that is artistic but does not detract from the focus of your portfolio i.e., the content.  Who’s with me?  But what he calls a good design is one that’s overloaded with images, with text that is too small, simply because the blind minion can “OMG link images!”

Maybe I’m a tad bitter that my more functional, accessible and elegant website ranked lower than the image slapped websites.  Ah well.  I must do what I believe is right.

Have you ever wondered why doing what is right isn’t always what rewards you?

Circle Of Friends

Well, my parents just left. They came over with pizza and birthday presents, and hung out for a few hours. I’m glad they brought pizza, cause I was starving. Since my birthday was yesterday, my mom brought me a couple of birthday gifts. She got me a nice red strawberry scented candle set. I love red, and it looks fabulous with my furniture and color scheme. She also bought me an awesome black wood framed mirror. I love both gifts. Chris got me a new computer chair. I’ve been needing one for quite some time because this old one is less than comfortable. Even though my actual birthday was kinda boring, it was still a good day. I’m not big on parties and stuff like that anymore so it wasn’t any big deal.

Circle of Friends is on HBO right now. My mom and I were trying to watch it but my step dad kept bitching about us watching what he calls a soap opera so we eventually gave up. Men can be so obnoxious sometimes! Anyway, the book Circle of Friends by Maeve Binchy is actually one of my all time favorite books, and even though the movie isnt nearly as good as the book and does not do the book justice, I still really like the movie. I haven’t seen it in years, so I was hoping to get to watch it. But oh well. Seeing it on the tv also made me miss the book, which I had until my old apartment was flooded last year and I lost tons of books that were on the bottom 2 shelves of my bookcase.

Speaking of books, I’m going to probably head over to the used book store on Monday or Tuesday and grab some more books. I haven’t gotten any new reading material in quite some time. I haven’t exactly been to this book store yet, but I’ve been meaning to stop in. I usually get my books off Amazon.Com, but I’m not sure if I will be able to do that anymore. I usually end up spending around $50-60 every single time I order books off there.

So I was an idiot on Saturday morning and decided to clean out the surplus amount of wax I had in my ear, but stuck the Q-tip (cotton swab? Swab with a cotton tip? Cotton bud? Whatever) in too far. Go my perforated ear drum, boo yah. I went to see a doctor this morning about it and she said it should heal in a week or two. I panicked on Saturday, since it was the day of the State Championships (see the result, sans the evil facial expression of my friend - we were betting on the fact that he would win and if that had happened, he would’ve owed me a packet of crisps and a two dollar coin) and I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to hear the musician properly. But all turned out alright! …apart from the fact that I had a perforated eardrum, damnit.

This isn’t the first time that I’ve been subject to temporary conductive hearing loss - this same thing happened at some point during December last year and it worked out perfectly well. The upside to all of this? I’m getting better (and longer) nights of sleep than I’ve had in a long time. I’d hope for this more often, but it would involve repeated tearings of my eardrum and that just isn’t happening.

On a tangent: the Olympics are over! (Yeah, you saw it right here folks, yet another person is posting about this!) I was cavorting around my living room like a mad thing when the Closing Ceremony came to a close; I’m fairly sure I woke up my neighbours when I repeatedly shrieked “NORMAL TELEVISION!” to nobody in particular. Don’t get me wrong - I selectively watched the events I liked (diving, artistic gymnatics, pole vault, swimming and cycling), but other than that, the furore (especially in the area where I reside, as it’s filled to bursting with Chinese and like-minded fanatics) gave me a headache and a half.

My university decided to overreact and put up posters and campaigns for it - you couldn’t sit in a seat and turn around on your arse without seeing “2008 Beijing Olympic Games” staring at you from one wall or another. I mean, okay, you’re excited - we get this. But this isn’t Beijing, and the Sydney Olympics were eight (count it, eight) years ago - if it was the Sydney Olympics, maybe it would make a little more sense. If I go back to uni tomorrow for another week of shiny posters and random members of faculties talking about the excitement of the 2008 Olympics, I’m going to the Vice-Chancellor’s office to bust a cap in her ass.

Right, that’s done. Now if you’ll all excuse me, I’m going to procrastinate my two essay plans that are due tomorrow (for which I’ve done no research, reading or work, of course!) and go and watch Oprah whilst half-deaf. Lovely.
